CNN fires Chris Cuomo – Channels Television

CNN has fired veteran presenter and correspondent Chris Cuomo, the cable news channel said on Saturday, as part of an investigation into his involvement in defending his brother Andrew Cuomo, the former governor of New York, against allegations of sexual misconduct.

Chris Cuomo had been suspended from CNN for the matter just days before his dismissal.

“We retained a respected law firm to conduct the review and terminated it, effective immediately,” a statement posted on CNN’s official communications Twitter account.

“During the process of this review, additional information came to light. “

The layoff comes after documents surfaced showing that Cuomo, who featured the 9:00 p.m. news slot, offered advice to his politician brother that was deemed too close for comfort by his employer.

“The documents, which we were not aware of prior to their public release, raise serious questions,” a CNN spokesperson said on Tuesday, adding that they “signaled a greater level of involvement in efforts to his brother than we previously thought “.

CNN found itself in the awkward position of reporting on the dismissal of one of its own presenters on Saturday.

“This isn’t how I want my time at CNN to end, but I’ve already told you why and how I helped my brother,” Cuomo, 51, said in a text message read to the on air by CNN media reporter Brian Stelter.

“So let me say now that, as disappointing as it is, I couldn’t be more proud of the ‘Cuomo Prime Time’ team,” Cuomo added. “I owe them all and I will be missed by this special group of people who did such an important job.”

Cuomo has spoken candidly about his close bond with his older brother.

“He’s my brother. And if I can help my brother, I do. If he wants me to hear something, I will. If he wants me to speak out on something, I will try,” he told investigators in July, when asked about the advice he offered.

“He’s my brother, and I love him to death no matter what.”

Democrat Andrew Cuomo was elected governor three times before stepping down in August after the New York attorney general said an investigation found he sexually harassed at least 11 women.

In October, the former governor – whose father Mario Cuomo had also served as governor of New York – was charged with a sexual offense for forced touching.

As the pandemic began, the Cuomo brothers reached new heights of popularity: Andrew, 63, was praised for his candid daily briefings as the coronavirus ravaged New York City, and his live interactions with Chris on CNN were peppered with jokes.

The investigation into Chris Cuomo’s conduct is still ongoing, CNN said.
