CherryRoad Media announced the acquisition of several newspapers in Minnesota, including the Crookston Times, all previously owned by Gannett.
In addition to The Times, the company has agreed to buy St. James Plaindealer, Redwood Falls Gazette, Granite Falls Advocate-Tribune, Montevideo American News, Tri-County News at Cottonwood, and Sleepy Eye Herald-Dispatch.
The purchase of these newspapers, which are all part of the USA Today Network, will be effective January 1, 2022.
CherryRoad’s other recent acquisitions from Gannett include several newspapers in Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, Iowa and Colorado. In Minnesota last year they bought the Cook County News-Herald in Grand Marais and earlier in 2021 founded the Rainy Lake Gazette in International Falls.
“We are really excited to be working with the high quality staff already in place in these communities,” said Jeremy Gulban, CEO of CherryRoad Media. “We want to bring together our technological skills and tools, and create great sources of online information and print newspapers for subscribers. “
Gulban mentioned that a special agreement was in place with Gannett ownership to allow for a relatively seamless transition to new ownership for the newspapers in question. He added that CherryRoad Media was willing to invest in local community newspapers as there was room for print and digital resources in news coverage, especially areas focused on local news.
“I don’t think a newspaper is a newspaper unless we print a newspaper,” Gulban continued. “There are some who want printed paper to hold in their hands, there are others who get their news online. We want to reduce the clutter and serve everyone with a better product.”
Gulban’s intention is to carry on the newspaper’s legacy into the future, battling economic forces with an infusion of creativity, energy and resources to support local newspapers.
“We look forward to supporting the communities our newspapers serve in any way we can. There are many exciting initiatives on the horizon with this new venture, with much more to look forward to in the coming months. Please continue to support your local newspapers and journalists. They serve to remind us of where we have been, as well as where we are heading.
CherryRoad Media is a division of CherryRoad Technologies, which began in 1983 with an office in Morris Plains, New Jersey. The company is now based in nearby Parsippany, New Jersey.
