This month TN Chart Founder Jess Gibson talks to Stephen Gray of Gray & Co., the independent go-to for contemporary and stylish menswear, which now also offers a capsule collection of womenswear. of creators…

Steve, how was Gray & Co. born?

After opening an Ilse Jacobsen concept store on the High Street (the first outside of Scandinavia), I opened a menswear boutique in the basement, which I cleverly called The Basement. After three years, I decided we needed to move menswear to a store with its own storefront, and Gray & Co. was born. We opened in Chapel Place, a walkable gem in Tunbridge Wells that is home to some fantastic independents.

How would you describe your clothes?

Our pieces are relaxed and casual. We mainly work with small companies that produce in Europe and use organic materials that are also sustainable.

What brands do you offer for men?

We avoid the big brands and instead work with smaller names including Emanual Berg shirts from Poland, Sunspel from the UK, Holebrook from Sweden, Knowledge Cotton from Denmark and Mac jeans from Germany. We also work with an Italian shirt company and an Italian knitwear supplier. We also stock socks from Peper Harow who produce locally in Burgess Hill.

You recently got into women’s fashion. Who can be found on your tracks?

A few of the brands we work with for menswear also have great pieces for women, such as Holebrook, Knowledge Cotton and Mac Jeans. But we’ve also found new names like Milano and the fantastic Camilla Pihl from Norway – we’re their only UK stockist.

How do you choose who you work with?

I’ve been in the industry for 35 years so most of the brands I stock are familiar to me by now. I also like to visit trade fairs in Florence and Copenhagen to find new talent. I look for high quality clothing brands that focus on sustainability.

Why should we search our independent clothing stores?

You receive a truly personalized service from an independent as well as better quality parts and also a much better knowledge and passion for their offer. I have a real love of beautiful clothes and so I have many loyal customers!

Why did you join the TN card?

I thought it was good to support a local business that works with freelancers in our city, understands how difficult it is to retail in the current climate, and wants to help. I also wanted to thank the community of Tunbridge Wells for their local support.

What pieces should we add to our wardrobes as summer approaches?

For men, we have a great selection of shirts, especially linen ones. Linen breathes and is very comfortable to wear in hot weather. For women we have fantastic dresses from Milano and Camilla Pihl to suit any occasion.
