A statement signed by the governor’s chief press secretary James Eze said reports that Obiano had been attacked was false and should be ignored.

The statement said: “The point is that when some gunmen hired security agents in a shootout in Ihiala today, Governor Obiano was attending a pre-scheduled political rally in the Ogbaru local government area with Professor Chukwuma Soludo, the standard bearer of all progressives. Grande Alliance in the governorate elections of November 6, 2021 in the state.

He added that “the Ogbaru campaign has been very successful with a large number of party members and supporters coming to reassure Professor Soludo and the APGA of their support in the upcoming elections.

“Governor Obiano deeply regrets the shooting in Ihiala today and the resulting loss of life. He calls on all politicians involved in the state’s ongoing election campaign to join him in calming the state’s political temperature to ensure a peaceful and fair election on November 6, 2021.

Previously, it was reported that armed men ambushed Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano during the APGA rally at Odoata Primary School in Ihiala.

It was established that the gunmen engaged the governor’s security guards, including the APGA candidate in the November ballot, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, in a shootout for about an hour.

According to a source, five of the gunmen were killed while a soldier lost his life in the duel.

A source said: “A combined team of police and soldiers this afternoon repelled an attack by unknown armed men at Odoata Primary School in Ihiala, where the All Progressives Grand Alliance was to organize a rally of campaign for the governorate elections on 6 November in Anambra state.

“The armed men came in several motorcycles and in three vehicles, namely a Toyota Lexus 350 ES registered EKY 765 EX, a Toyota RAV4 with the number JJJ 434FP and a Ford van whose number could not be established. because it caught fire during the exchange of bullets between the armed men and the security forces.

“The armed men, unable to withstand the superior firepower of the soldiers and the police, quickly rushed to the large premises of the Notre-Dame de Lourdes hospital, which is just in front of the countryside.

“They suffered serious injuries, even though they managed to shoot a valiant soldier.”

“If the armed men had not rushed into the hospital which is a very delicate place to shoot anyone, the security men would have shot them all.”

State Police Public Relations Officer Ikenga Tochukwu confirmed the incident.

He said: “The exhibits recovered include an AK 47 rifle; two magazines with 30 cartridges; a Lexus 350 SUV, a Rav4 SUV, a Mercedes Benz and a Toyota Corolla.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the thugs started shooting indiscriminately upon arriving at Odata Central School, but they were successfully repelled by police and military on the ground.

“Normalcy has been restored and operations are continuing in the region for the possible arrest of fugitive gang members.

Governor Obiano reportedly praised the police and soldiers who repelled the attack for their bravery.

He called the response from security guards professional and patriotic.

Soludo expressed sympathy for the innocent victims of the attack, begging each aggrieved person to lay down the weapon and opt for dialogue to resolve their grievances in the interest of the people.
