This month, SO magazine talks to Alex Greig, founder of Fuggles Beer Café and the new Bottle Shop on Camden Road, about where he likes to hang out in and around Tunbridge Wells when not working.

Where do you live?

I now live in Southborough after having lived in the city centre.

How long have you lived there and what made you decide to move?

We’ve been in our new home for just over a year – it’s a lovely, friendly neighborhood and close enough to town for anything we might need.

What is your favorite store locally?

I should probably say Locality the Greengrocers on Camden Road. We use them at Fuggles and at home too. They always have a great selection of fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables, so you can’t really go wrong!

Where is the best place to go for a Sunday walk?

Hurst Woods is a beautiful walk and still one of our favorites. It is located on the northwest outskirts of Tunbridge Wells and features a number of non-native tree species. The dog also loves the “water elements” – AKA the stream that runs through the woods!

The best place to have a cup of coffee?

The Black Dog on Camden Road is my usual go-to for my caffeine fix!

Where do you take people when they come to visit you?

I usually head to one of the great independent food and drink options we have in town. We have such a wide variety of different establishments that it’s nice to show off the uniqueness of all the food and drink on offer here in Tunbridge Wells.

How is the nightlife where you live?

Southborough is quite relaxed – so if we feel like going out properly, we tend to end up in town.

What is your favorite place to eat locally?
I’m a big fan of Yatra on London Road in Southborough, their Indian food is really authentic. I love the street food style of everything they do and it’s perfect food to enjoy with beer.

Are there any beautiful sights near your home?

The view of the Ridgeway in Southborough, whether at sunrise or sunset, is stunning. The first full moon this year was stunning to see first thing in the morning – and on a clear day you can see as far as Hadlow from there.

If you are looking to relax and unwind, what is your favorite place?

To be completely honest, chilling out and relaxing isn’t usually my forte! But if I’m after some ‘me time’, a quiet pint in a cool pub ticks all the boxes for me.

What’s the best place to meet friends and socialize – other than Fuggles of course! ?

This is a very tricky question as we have so many great places locally – whether it’s to eat, drink or just take the dog for a walk. There is also plenty of variety to suit many different occasions. I’m not sure there’s enough room here to list them all!

What do you do when you spend a weekend or a day off in the area?

We have a wacky Cocker Spaniel and a one year old baby, so days off usually involve a good walk with the dog and spending time with the family. It can be a good meal with friends or family, or go a little further into the countryside for a walk.

Why do you like where you live?

I think we’re really lucky to be where we are: we have the countryside on our doorstep and a town center full of great independent shops, pubs and restaurants too. It’s a lovely, friendly place to raise a family and there’s plenty to do, whether it’s exploring what’s around us, seeing friends, seeing great live music or going out for a meal. There are also plenty of great events throughout the year that cater to all tastes.

What are you excited about in 2022 at Tunbridge Wells?

Some of the downtown regeneration plans look great. And with the restrictions easing further, if we want to go out a bit further, that’s quite easy to do as we’re so close to the coast and London of course too!
