Western Michigan @ Michigan State No. 10
Last season’s records: Michigan State 11-2; West Michigan 8-5
What there is to know
The Michigan State Spartans and the Western Michigan Broncos face off at 7 p.m. ET on September 2 at Spartan Stadium to kick off their 2022 seasons. The Spartans finished 11-2 last season and capped things off with a win over the Michigan Panthers. Pittsburgh in the Peach Bowl, so they’re looking for another strong season. While WMU wasn’t exactly the top dog last year, they finished the year with an 8-5 winning record.
Some defensive numbers to keep in mind heading into kickoff: MSU was sixth-best in the nation for sacks, finishing the 2021 season with 42. The Broncos were completely on par: They also ranked sixth in the nation for bags, closing the year with 42 overall. With that kind of ball pressure, don’t be surprised if there are a lot of short passes in this one.
MSU has the odds in its favor, so they will need to guard against complacency. These early season matchups can go both ways when both teams get back into shape.
