Less than 24 hours after Canada opened its 2022 World Junior Championship with a victory, the host nation is back on Thursday with a match against Slovakia.
Canada began its journey to a gold medal by beating Latvia 5-2 on Wednesday. Five different players scored and Connor Bedard, Mason McTavish, William Dufour and Ridly Greig each scored two points. Sebastian Cossa took the win in goal.
Latvia made things much more interesting than expected. After Bedard opened the scoring, he tied the game with a goal late in the first period. Canada then built a 4-1 lead after two periods on two power-play goals, but Latvia fought back with a power-play goal in the third period.
Dufour’s goal five minutes from time gave Canada a breather. Now the focus is on Slovakia.
